Project
Our project work was multifacted this past week--there was time for an ancient civilization simulation, planning for Level 3 dinner and doing a lesson on mindfulness. Our simulation showed how new ideas surfaced when emperors/kings wanted their civilians to be obedient--the new ideas came through cultural diffusion with trading with other civilizations. Be sure to get your tickets for our feast--the kids have worked hard! And, for mindfulness we found learned ways to slow down the worry section of our brain.
Ask how did civilizations get new ideas?
Listen to your child discuss the Level 3 dinner.
Extend the learning by creating a mindfulness routine at home.
Literacy
The Merlins continue their diligent work on their research paper. We worked on our intro and 2 body paragraphs last week. Our first, full draft is due this upcoming Friday! We practiced some editing skills with our writing as well.We always squeeze in some free-choice reading each day--that way I can also get our reading assessments done.
Ask what will your last body paragraph be about for your research paper?
Listen to your child read the intro to their research paper.
Extend the learning by coming up with a family research project for the summer!
6th Grade Math
There won't be any class math this week as we conduct our standardized testing. I hope the 6th graders will feel confident to do their best. We talked about if a question seems too hard, to do the following:
1. Stop and breathe and give yourself a put-up!
2. Read and re-read the problem
3. Think about what operation it's asking
4. Draw a picture
5. DO SOME WORK ON PAPER!!!
6. Check the answers for what makes sense / eliminate some answers if possible.
As a class, we will also need to take an algebra final to assess on the last lessons we did before summer!
Ask what will you do if you get stuck on a question on the standardized test?
Listen to your child explain the 2 practice performance tasks we did on Friday
Extend the learning by coming up with a summer math plan!
