*Please ask for your child's agenda each night to go over homework for the evening. Also, you should be looking for your child's reflection every Monday--it's a way for all of us to stay in communication about meeting expectations.
Literacy
- Spelling homework this week!
- If your child isn't finished with the poetry anthology--that is additional homework for your child. It was due Friday the 20th.
The Coffee House Poetry Night was a raving success! To use a word my mom coined, all of the
students were “proudable.” It’s such a worth-while risk stepping in front of that mic to share your inner
most feelings. Way to go! We’ll do a little reflecting on the poetry unit and then kick off writing
from different perspectives. This mini-unit will take us until winter break.
For reading, we’ll wrap up our nature adventure stories this week, looking at how to retell a story and documenting evidence for the theme.
Ask, what surprised you the most—about yourself as a poetry writer?
Listen to your child retell you their nature adventure story in a succinct fashion, using the retell
rope.
Extend the learning by reading a nature adventure story as a family.
Systems: Nature and Design
As a class we’ve compared different systems to clean waste water, get rid of waste, grow food,
take care of pests, and forest land. Now, it’s time to take our science background from outdoor school
and these comparisons and try to solve a sustainability problem within Forest Grove. We’ll be talking
with individuals from the Forest Grove Sustainability Commission about the most pressing problems
of our community during Tuesday's In and About.
Ask, what are unintended consequences?
Listen to what the differences were in the stands of trees we looked at at Magness Tree Farm.
Extend the learning by researching inventions inspired using biomimicry.
6th Grade Math
Sixth graders will wrap up solving equations with variables this week. At this point, students should
Know how to solve 1 step equations in all operations. We’ll continue practicing this skill by
Re-looking at those formulas from the last block—geometry formulas, batting averages, distance and
interest. Most kids will benefit from reviewing these formulas, based on the challenges we had during
the last block. And, we’ll look at how solve equations with 2 steps. We’ll be starting the test on Friday after a review and a math challenge.
Ask, your child to solve 3x =21.
Listen to your child explain the steps to solving an equation with a variable.
Extend the learning by writing expressions that apply to your life.
5th Grade Math
This week we will turn our focus and investigation of fractions using the number line. Students will review some understandings of whole numbers on number line to connect new understandings about fractions. We will explore multiples on the number line, including unit fractions, as well as develop an understanding or the importance of the unit on the number line. This week, we will have a special guest in the 5th grade math class. I have asked Dr. Gowri Meda to do some co-teaching with me on the topic of fractions.
Ask, What is a number?
Listen to your mathematician share observations about multiples of 1/2, 1/3 and 1/5 on the number line.
Extend Locate 1/8 on the number line and find 2/8 of 48 balloons.
