A plea from the Merlins:
The Level 3 students are excited to announce that we are having a Feast Through the Ages! The dinner will be on Monday, June 5th. We have two seating available times, the first one will be from 5:00-6:00 and the second will be 6:30-7:30.
We need volunteers for this day. We have 3 volunteer slots one from 9:00-11:00am ( that's when you would cook with us, the Merlins) one from12:00-2:00pm and one from 2:00-5:00pm. Volunteers may earn you a free dinner for themselves and one extra person! If you are available to help out contact Gretchen via email. We are also looking for raffle donations. It would be amazing if you own or know someone who owns a small business that could donate to the raffle. We hope that all the families can make this special event.
Literacy
The Merlins have been diligently working on their Smarter Balanced testing and note-taking for the research project. I've been impressed with the determination on both parts. During our research, I've enjoyed hearing students share websites that have had good information. We've had good discussions on what makes a good source to get information from. This week we will have lessons on how to turn our notes into writing! By the time this week ends students should have their introduction written and 1-2 body paragraphs written. There will be no spelling this week so Merlins can focus on using their reading & writing time at home to work on the research paper. Please help them meet the research paper's deadline.
Ask your child to see his/her note-taking in Google Docs.
Listen to your child share some interesting facts on the topic being studied.
Extend the learning by researching about an ancient civilization as a family.
Project
Our project work is a combination of getting ready for our Level 3 fundraising dinner (Monday, June 5th) and ancient civilization research. Students are creating signs, writing donation letters, making tickets and so much more to get this exciting event put together.
Ask what role do you have for the Level 3 dinner, what shift are you working?
Listen to your child explain how the dinner will work.
Extend the learning by thinking through roles of a fundraising dinner.
6th Grade Math
The 6th graders really seem to enjoy and comprehend our algebra lessons. Last week we looked at how to write & simplify expressions. I will wrapping up as much algebra as we can this week and doing some test prep so students fee confident for starting the Smarter Balanced test next week, the 30th.
Ask, simplify the expressions 7x+3y-x+3C+2y
Listen to your child explain how you solve for a variable.
Extend the learning by finding ways algebra happens in our everyday lives.
5th Grade Math
The 5th grade mathematicians enthusiastically began our investigation of area and volume by building robots. A short math block on Friday gave the 5th graders an opportunity to try out a couple interactive about surface area, volume and cube nets.
This week we continue looking at volume of 3 dimensional rectangular prisms. By now, most mathematicians understand and can use the formula for volume and are ready to apply it in a real-world setting. At the end of the week, 5th graders will have time to explore the state test which will begin on Monday, May 30th.
ASK your 5th grader to figure out the volume of a rectangular prism with length -23 cm, width - 11cm and height- 3 cm.
LISTEN to your 5th grader tell you about test-taking strategies he or she will use on the state test.
EXTEND the learning by looking for volume in everyday life.
