News of the Week
Literacy
- Writing homework this week: Spelling City!
- Note that reading homework on Monday will be to practice for their Writers' Share Tuesday at Jennings McCall.
- If you want to attend the Writers' Share on Tuesday and need a specific time, please let me know on Monday and I will do my best to accommodate. We will be starting at 1:00 and finished by 2:30. There will be a short intermission half-way between the groups.
The Merlins are getting into their literature circles –all of the books are realistic fiction. And, we’re reading an example of realistic fiction as a class. For writing we’ll be doing some preparation on how to write a persuasive piece given specific texts to refer to.
Ask, what book are you reading for your literature circle and what do you think of it so far?
Listen to your child read the section of the elder story they’ll be sharing on Tuesday.
Extend the learning by reading and discussing a realistic fiction story as a family.
Project
We wrapped up our Colonial America unit before break. We looked at some issues of the Revolutionary War and part of our present day government, specifically local, state and federal government.
Ask, what things are left for local, state and federal governments to decide?
Listen to your child explain the battle they learned about for the Revolutionary War.
Extend the learning by researching what happened after the Declaration was signed.
6th Grade Math
Before break, 6th graders continued practicing addition and subtraction of fractions. This included having to borrow to subtract. We’ll be moving into multiplication this week.
Ask, how do you subtract 5 1/8 – 3 ¾?
Listen to your child explain the math challenge we did on cupcakes!
Extend the learning by looking at how fractions are a part of our everyday life.
5th Grade Math
Before break, 5th grade mathematicians worked some more with area of a rectangle with fractional sides, then took a short detour from fractions to learn and practice conversion of U.S. liquid measurements. This week we will return to fractions to explore division with fractions and we will end our week with a unit test on division and multiplication of fractions.
ASK your mathematician to show you the memorization graphic for U.S. liquid measurement conversions.
LISTEN to your mathematician prove n x a/b less than n.
EXTEND the learning by practicing conversion of liquid measurement with items in your pantry.
