Project
Tuesday was such a great day seeing Merlins share wonderful presentations regarding their Fernhill research. It was very much a proud teacher moment. Students were confident, professional and open to discussing their work. Rest of our project work focused on learning about Ancient Rome and starting to brainstorm research ideas for research project on ancient civilizations.
Ask your child what their favorite part was of Tuesday's presentation.
Listen to your child explain their topic for the research project.
Extend the learning by researching what impacts ancient civilizations have had on us today.
Literacy
Most of our literacy work was focused on taking the Smarter Balanced test and preparing for the research project. I appreciated the perseverance students showed while working on such a hard test. And, I was excited for their enthusiasm to wrap up the year with research. The students have really good research ideas. At this point students know their topic and subtopics. We've done a lesson on note-taking and students have had one day to take notes. They'll have this week to research and take notes. Then, we'll start taking our notes to planning paragraphs starting on the 22nd. Help your student keep up-to-date with the project expectations.
Ask your child why we should triangulate when we do research?
Listen to your child share some of the interesting facts they've learned during the research process.
Extend the learning by going to the library to find more resources for the research project,
6th Grade Math
Algebra is such a fun way to wrap up the year! This week we took a short assessment on order of operations, and started to look at variables and the variety of formulas that use variables. Please look for their order of operation test to be signed. Of course, help your child review misconceptions or set up a time for them to come in early to work with me!
Ask your child to solve 4a-b, when a is 4 and b is 6.
Listen to your child explain a problem they got wrong on their order of operation assessment.
Extend the learning by showing how formulas are used in everyday life.
5th Grade Math-
Last week the 5th grade mathematicians took on some complex numerical expressions with confidence. We ended the week with a unit assessment. On Monday students will have one more block to complete this assessment and all tests will be returned on Tuesday. Please watch for your students test and reflection. This should be signed and returned no later thanFriday, May 19. Mid-week we will get into our last unit before testing- volume.
ASK your 5th grader how he or she felt they did on the expressions test.
LISTEN to your 5th grader share his or her reflection.
EXTEND the learning by looking for how volume of solid figures is used in the real world.
