5/9--Fernhill Presentation from 12-1 at Clean Water Services 2550 SW Hillsboro Highway
5/12--Full Day and Fund Run
Project
Last week we "dug" through 3 different sites around Ancient Greece to try and determine the location of Troy. In the process we learned how much background investigating would have happened before the first shovel hit the ground. In our simulation we learned a little about Athens, Sparta and Troy. It was quite the experience!
Ask your child what led us to correctly identifying where Troy was located?
Listen to your child explain what their artifact was suppose to represent.
Extend the learning by researching a civilization as a family.
Literacy
Most of our literacy time was either spent on reading about Ancient Greece or getting ready for our Fernhill presentation. I absolutely loved the positive buzz I felt in the air when I could just stop, look around the classroom and see every student hard at work. Some were creating slides, others were practicing speeches and others were planning other components to their project. Such a great feeling seeing independent scholars and life-long learners hard at work.
Ask your child what was an interesting fact they learned while reading about Ancient Greece.
Listen to your child give their presentation--they access it on Google Slides.
Extend the learning by finding articles to read about ancient civilizations.
6th Grade Math
Our first algebra block seems to be flying by! The students have been grasping the material quite quickly. And, we had interesting conversations about why orders of operation are so important and the importance of showing "your lines" when solve algebraic expressions. I am hoping students bring home their stats test by Tuesday for you to review and sign.
Ask your child to solve 45 - 5^2 / 5.
Listen to your child go over the last stats test.
Extend the learning by creating challenging expressions and see if everyone gets the same answer.
5th Grade Math-
Last week 5th grade mathematicians explored simplifying expressions and the grouping symbols for more complicated expressions. This week we will extend the learning through error analysis - looking at fictional students' problem solving steps and identifying and correcting the error. We will also look at expressions and grouping symbols within the applied context of word problems.
ASK your 5th grade mathematician to simplify the expression { 4 [ 3 + 4 x (8 - 5) + 10 ]} and explain why he or she is solving it in that order.
LISTEN to your 5th grader share what is easy about simplifying expressions with grouping symbols and what can be challenging.
EXTEND THE LEARNING by making up equations with grouping symbols and using order of operations to solve them.
