Other Announcements
Other--Health and Safety: We started our school's "child protection unit" which challenges kids to think about safe decision making and reporting of incidents. I sent home "Home Link" worksheets that can allow for more conversations to take place at home. I was impressed by the thoughtful and mature comments kiddos made during these lessons. We have a few more to go. Contact me if you have any questions about this, or the upcoming puberty lesson, which will be led by Vanessa.
Save the date to attend our end-of-year fund-raiser!
Based on your input, we have decided to host our end-of-year fund-raiser on the evening of Friday, June 8th. This year, our event will take place at the beautiful Fernhill Wetlands! We will ask students to volunteer for a shift (approximately 5-6 or 6:30-7:30), and hope that friends and family can attend to eat delicious food, learn about health in a beautiful place and help raise funds for next year's Outdoor School! Tickets will be for sale at the Celebrations of Learning, and all next week in the office.
The kids have really enjoyed taking their personal moments and turning their writing into a digital story! I am excited to see how their final products take shape. Videos and memoirs will premiere at the Celebrations of Learning on Thursday--check it out! Literature circles are wrapping as are the end of the year reading assessments. Keep working hard Merlins--your break is almost upon us!
Ask what have you enjoyed about using Wevideo?
Listen as your student discusses the challenges of video editing.
Extend the learning by making a digital story where every family member adds narration.
Project
As I already stated, the Merlins did a nice job handling the mature content of "Recognize, Report and Refuse" when thinking through challenging situations that deal with personal health and our bodies. We also worked hard during class soccer--such a fun activity to get healthy and work together. I honestly think every one of these students should find a soccer club to join--that's how much everyone is into it! And, we even found some time to skim the surface of our body's defense systems (physical and chemical) as well as the immune system!
Ask, how will you use "Recognize, Report and Refuse"?
Listen as your child talks about the immune system and its features.
Extend the learning as you think of ways to keep the immune system healthy.
Math
What a year it’s been! Wednesday starts testing in math. The best way to help your kiddo is to remind them to: breathe, use positive self talk, go slow—step-by-step, and USE PAPER AND PENCIL!!! A good night’s rest and a proper breakfast also works wonders! In 6th grade math, we worked in a bit more algebra and looked over the practice state test. 5th graders corrected their "expressions" test, and starting an end-of-year food truck challenge.
