News of the Week
LAST week of State Testing will take this place for both 5th and 6th grades. This week, students will be starting the math test.
How you can help your child this week during testing:
- Encourage your child to relax and do his/her best.
- Help your child get a good night’s rest.
- Staying hydrated and eating nutritious food will also help fuel your child’s success.
Literacy
- Writing homework this week: work on memoir and digital story. Digital story is due May 31st.
This week is all about meeting deadlines and students pushing themselves to get quality work produced for Celebrations of Learning, our ELC buddies, Nana Cardoons and state testing. Be sure to check in with your student nightly about what’s expected.
Memoir and Digital Story due on the 31st!
Nana Cardoons:
I need to know if you child plans on being present for the big event. Please see information below.
It's that time of year again; time for our annual Nana Cardoon's dinner. This year we are celebrating health and well being and Level 3 have come up with the Fresh, Fit Feast!
Merlins and Kestrels have visited Nana Cardoon's multiple times this year and have developed a special bond they'd like to share with you. It's a beautiful, sustainable, urban farm where healthy living is embodied (perfect for our unit!)
All students are asked and invited to participate in helping with the evening. They’ve been working in focused groups for the past few weeks. Please see the schedule below for when your child has been scheduled to work.
Please confirm if the time works for you. And contact me with questions or concerns as soon as possible. Your child isn't required to attend, but we'd love to have his/her presence.
You can purchase tickets in the office starting next week Tuesday and at Celebrations of Learning on Wednesday. Each seating has 60 tickets available. Here is the information:

Tips for evening:
· Please pick up and drop off, promptly at the specified time
· Drop off at Nana Cardoons, but park at Lincoln Park (at the skate park parking lot, it’s about a ½ mile walk.)
· If you would like your child to eat, you should plan on purchasing a ticket for the shift he/she is not working.
· As you help your child be successful for this evening, please remind your child that all students are expected to help with clean up during their given shift.
*If your child needs a different shift or cannot attend, please let me know ASAP. Not all students need to be present. But, it’s a lovely event and everyone who participated last year deemed it a highlight!

We used the week to look at measures of center. By examining our average step length we practiced finding mean, median, mode and range. We also looked at ways to represent data such as dot plots, histograms, and box and whisker plots. I find this strand of math pertinent to our choices as consumers and how we understand science and news reports.
Ask, how do you find the mean, median, mode and range?
Listen to your child explain the importance of knowing different ways to represent data.
Extend the learning by looking at statistics in your everyday life.
5th Grade Math
We spent several days last week on rounding decimals. We used numberless to illustrate the value and help students see why a number is rounded up or stays the same. Students practiced using the rule to round to the nearest tenth, hundredth and thousandth. We also spent time reviewing student-chosen topics, including division with fractions, long division and conversions of liquid and linear measurements. This week, 5th graders return to the state test for the final portion- the performance task.
ASK your mathematician to explain rounding 374.6 to the nearest whole number using the number line.
LISTEN to your child explain the rule for rounding decimals.
EXTEND the learning by practicing rounding decimals to the nearest whole numbers and nearest tenths during your best trip to the grocery store.
