Feb. 3rd--Geo Bee 10-1130 at the FG Library
Feb. 7th--OMSI rescheduled!
Feb. 20th--No School, President's Day
We enjoyed different labs each day last week, even though it was a short week. Two of the labs looked at what happens to signify a chemical reaction. Another one looked at the conservation of matter. We'll be wrapping up the chemistry unit this week. There will be a short assessment to see for kids to study for too. So, look for a study guide on Monday.
Ask how do you know that matter is conserved during a reaction?
Listen to your child describe how temperatures changed during the baking soda lab and the steel wool and vinegar lab.
Extend the learning by finding experiments to do in your own kitchen.
Literacy
Students are in the process of wrapping up their first book in the fantasy series. I've enjoyed being able to talk to different groups about the literary devices we've examined like "point of view" and "theme." I equally look forward to having kids start the 2nd book so they can see how the character changes and where the story goes in the sequel! Because it was such a short week, we did a little more brainstorming for our upcoming fantasy. This week kids will be drafting their lead / exposition.
Ask what was the theme of your 1st lit circle book?
Listen to your child describe their favorite point of view a story is told and why.
Extend the learning by examining what makes for really wonderful writing!
6th Grade Math
It will be so nice to have a full week with the 6th graders! We continued practicing multiplying and dividing mixed numbers last week. And, trying to discern a division story problem from a multiplication one. Finally, we looked at why using compatible numbers to estimate an answer to a mixed number multiplication/division problem is a swell idea. We'll study a bit early in the week and start taking the test.
Ask what is 2 7/8 divided by 4 2/7?
Listen to your child talk about differences from a multiplication and division story problem.
Extend the learning by finding real world applications of multiplying and dividing mixed numbers.
5th Grade Math-
5th grade mathematicians began the week with decimal test review, corrections and reflection Overall, the class did really well on this unit. Your mathematician is expected to review the test and reflection with you. Please sign the reflection. This is due by Tuesday, jan.31st. If your mathematician scored a 79% or below, he or she will have need to retake to demonstrate proficiency. Khan Academy offers free, short instructional videos on all the unit's concepts and skills. Your child's math notebook also has the great resource of the unit's lesson notes and handouts to help your child review. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
This week, mathematicians will complete retakes (if needed). We'll also spend time investigating powers of ten and patterns in multiplying and dividing by them. Toward the end of the week, we'll jump back into our last fraction study- multiplication and division with fractions and decimals.
Homework this week will be problems of the week. You can find this in the math notebook section, "Problems of the Week."
ASK- What is 5.7085 rounded the nearest hundredth?
LISTEN- To your mathematician share patterns in multiplying and dividing by powers of ten.
EXTEND the learning by looking for decimal operations in everyday situations.
