Thank you, to all the students and families for helping to make the Goal Setting Conferences a huge success. I enjoyed checking in with families and hearing students take ownership over what they want to get better at. What's most important now, is not forgetting what we discussed! Please refer to the paperwork with your student's goals listed. And, every week we will reflect on one area: reading, writing, or stewardship/scholarship/citizenship (math is reflected on after tests.) Parents are asked to sign these reflections, so please use this as an opportunity to do a goal check-in with your kiddo. The reflections are usually sent home on a Monday and need to be turned in by Friday. If you feel like a goal needs to be tweaked, please get in touch with me! It will likely take me a week or two to get everything in order for what was discussed during conferences. If you feel like you are waiting for me to provide something to you, please remind me if you don't hear from me after a week or so.
Ask what goal will be the hardest for your child?
Listen to your child talk about what they liked and didn't like with Goal-Setting. (Give me any feedback too!)
Extend the learning by setting goals as a family.
Project
Although it was a short week, the Merlins were busy scientists! We did our first data collection at Fernhill Wetlands on Tuesday. What a great day it was! I love seeing the success students have when working in small groups and on such an important project. Next week we are back to Leaf Pack!
Ask what was your favorite part of the Fernhill data collection?
Listen to why the restoration project is so important to the community.
Extend the learning by carrying out your child's research project somewhere else!
Literacy
With the short week we found just enough time to figure out our Typing Web log-in information, celebrate our first writing project, read from Flush, and finish a reader's response. The highlight for me was hearing kids read a small excerpt of their profile article!
Ask how do you think Abbey and Noah will bust Dusty Muleman?
Listen to your student explain how Typing Web works.
Extend the learning by reading other books that have an environmental theme.
6th Grade Math
Sixth graders plugged away on their 2nd test--multiplying and dividing decimals. Most of this next week will be dedicated to extending our learning with these concepts and fixing our misconceptions. Please note that test corrections and the retake will be due by Friday. Next week I will ask families to be sure to sign the math test reflection. But, I hope all families ask to see their child's test Monday or Tuesday. Those who turned in their test on Wednesday will get it back on Monday. Those who turn the test in on Monday will get their test back on Tuesday.
Ask, what problems on your test would you like to go over with me?
Listen to how your child felt about the test.
Extend the learning by showing how decimals and multiplied and divided in everyday life.
5th Grade Math
Last week, 5th graders worked hard to complete their unit test on multiplication and division of whole numbers. Tests will be returned on Monday and 5th graders will have time to reflect on their work and make any test corrections. Most of the errors made were computation errors, not procedural. 5th graders who do not show proficiency on this test (80% and up) will retake the test, starting next week, after time to review and practice. Your child will bring their test and reflection home to share with you. Please take time to look it over together and sign the reflection. Signed reflections and tests are due no later than Friday, Nov. 4th. While test corrections should take priority as homework this week, Problems of the Week are in your child's math notebook, in a section titled, "Problems of the Week." later this week, we move into our fraction unit, beginning with adding and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators. Please let me know if you have any questions.
ASK what problems your child would like to go over with you.
LISTEN to your child tell you what he or she remembers about the Fundamental Fact of Equivalent Fractions and adding or subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.
EXTEND Look for fractions in everyday life.
