First Week Back
What an awesome first week back with the Merlins! I was really impressed by everyone's flexibility, creativity, and willingness to engage in authentic conversations with each other while working on team-building in groups and as a class, establishing norms, interviewing peers for a poetry project, and engineering projects in pairs. The energy in our classroom seems to be enthusiastic so far, and I am excited to keep in rolling into week two! In our first math classes, fifth graders shared strategies around a tricky popsicle stick puzzle, while 6th graders got to know each other and think outside the box with a numerical scavenger hunt.
Ask: What ideas did you add to the class expectations? What are you most excited about for the year?
Talk about: Morning meetings. What happens at meetings? What was your favorite part this week?
Extend the learning: Explain your team's strategy for protecting your water balloon. Share what words you chose to describe yourself in your 5 word poem. Do you have any hopes for a particular permanent classroom job?
Outdoor School (mystery word)
As you can see, Outdoor School is still several weeks away, but paperwork is due this Tuesday! Email me if you need another copy. Although I have never personally been, I have been told that this is an amazing experience for Level 3 students to explore science concepts in the field and connect with new friends. It can also be a little intimidating to be away from home for four days. Please reach out if you have any questions about the week, or learn more about the program: http://www.nwoutdoorschool.org. Payments or plans are due the 20th - look out for a link to the online payment option next week.
Agendas & Homework
That's right, agendas will be coming home Monday night with our first official week of homework! Students are responsible for recording the week's homework in their agendas, and showing completed work to an adult at home to get a signature each night. We recommend starting the year strong by finding a homework routine that works for your family. This week, our homework will look like:
- Reading: Monday - read this newsletter and record the mystery word. T/W/Th - Read for 20 minutes and record what you read.
- Math: Expect a worksheet or problem set each night. Plan on 15-25 minutes of math.
- Writing: Complete your classroom job application. (Due Friday).
