Nice job to all families that got agendas signed nightly. This week, keep it up!
- Reading: same as last week. Read the newsletter Monday, and reading of choice Tuesday-Thursday.
- Writing: students will have a special assignment - to choose a "Theme Song" and write 2 paragraphs about it. Families, your child may like help selecting a song, but please keep in mind that our goal is to see what kind of writing work they can get done independently!
- Math: expect an 10-20 minute assignment each day.
Thank you so much for getting ODS forms in so quickly! While it is still a few weeks away, here are some useful details to get on your calendar:
- Letters - If you would like to send a letter to your Level 3 student while at camp, aim to put it in the mail the Friday before we leave. No candy, please :) Address as follows:
17450 Old Pacific Hwy, #7
Rockaway Beach OR 97136
- Friday, September 20th - first payments are due! You may now pay online here, or bring checks or exact cash to the school office.
- Monday, September 30th - Luggage and medication drop-off after school, 3:20-5:30. We ask that all families bring luggage to school the night before to make sure we are ready to go! Find the packing list here and look for a reminder the week before.
- Tuesday, October 1st - Normal arrival at school! We will depart shortly after 9:00 - students should not arrive before 8:35 on Tuesday.
- Friday, October 4th - We generally arrive back at school around 1:30-2:00. Reminder- this is a non-school day for FGCS and there will be no bus service. Plan to keep an eye out for day-of arrival updates, and be ready to pick your child up. They will be tired and eager to see you!
Merlins launched into our "sustainable systems" unit by beginning to look at different organisms in an ecosystem. We learned how producers (mystery word) use photosynthesis to harvest energy from the sun, and began to develop models of dream farms. Students will soon learn about the other types of organisms in ecosystems and decide whether or not their agroecosystems are truly healthy!
Talk about what might happen if all producers on earth suddenly vanished!
Talk about what types of producers you might have in or around your home.
It is all about poetry this fall, and the Merlins clearly have some poetic skills! This week, students worked with a classmate to craft "Important Poems." We will type these up this week after discussing the responsibility that comes with technology use. We also learned about "fire-writing" and practiced letting our imaginations fly on the paper for just 5-10 minutes every day. Finally, we're super excited to start our first class read of the year, "Love that Dog" by Sharon Creech. This short book-in-verse will really get us thinking about our own feelings towards writing.
Talk about Jack in "Love that Dog" - what is your first impression of the book?
I have had a blast discussing math with this group so far. This week, we used some mathematical patterns to talk about our amazing human ability to visualize math in our brains! We also worked on a short assessment and will be diving into volume this week. Look at the link above and discuss the patterns you can find with your student!
This week in sixth grade math we finished learning about the features of our textbooks and culminated with a game of textbook jeopardy with our table groups! We then dove into some placement testing so that I could get a good idea of where everyone is. Looking into this week, we will be moving into our first block to review place value and start wrapping our heads around decimals. Click here for a website where you can get a quick overview of what a lesson might look like in the textbook, knowing what each box or section represents may help you help your student if they get stuck at any point. We are starting with Decimals and Fractions, but will be flipping the second two books so that we end with introductory algebra.
Ask your student:
How does this book show you how to use math in the real world?
What is the difference between exercises and review?
