News of the Week
Homework
Check those agendas! There will be regular homework this week: reading and Typing Web. After Outdoor School there will be reading, Typing Web and math.
Outdoor School
On Monday the 21st, your child's luggage and medication will need to be dropped off at the classroom between 500-630. Please medication in a separate container, in prescription bottles with directions. We will send home a packing list again on Friday! Building Our Team
We continue our work together as a team. Last week, we decorated paper copies of our hands in a raised position. These will get hung up this week to signify that we all want to create a safe and healthy environment. We came up with a phrase, "Put your hand in the air if you care. Have the courage
to let your mark leave a positive spark." We also had a lovely Out and About to Nana Cardoons where we were able to connect as a class by preparing and enjoying a lovely meal together. This week we'll work to finalize our classroom expectations.
Project Work: Bridges
Last week we looked at different types of bridges and why certain types are used in certain situations. We did some engineering at Nana Cardoons using newspaper too. This week we start planning and maybe even building our toothpick bridges!
Ask, what shape adds strength to a bridge?
Listen to what architects and designers have to consider before building a bridge.
Extend the learning by constructing a toothpick or popsicle bridge at home.
Literacy
We put in some work to get our reading and writing components in our binders. We still have some work to do on this. But, more importantly, we started to read Love That Dog a narrative poem from a boy's perspective about writing poetry in his class. We'll the book, almost painfully slow so that we can take time to learn how to respond to reading and use this book as a mentor text for how to write poetry. We'll also get some poetry started in our writing workshop.
Ask, what is a power write?
Listen to why your child thinks Jack doesn't want to write poetry for his teacher.
Extend the learning by reading poetry together as a family. Share your favorite poems.
6th Grade Math
Our 6th grade math started off with logic problems, simply using a deck of cards. One game we played was "31-derful." You try to build a 5 x 5 grid using a deck of cards where every column and row equals 31. Two groups successfully found a solution! The next day we played Four 4s. We discussed how these problems had us using math practices (basically life-long learning skills for math) found within the Common Core. Pretty cool! We'll continue these types of activities next week, do some pre-assessments and create pieces of art relating to our math hopes and dreams.
Ask, how did you use "I can solve problems w/out giving up" in your card games?
Listen to how we played Four 4s.
Extend the learning by playing these two games at home or find other card games that build logic skills.
5th Grade Math:
Our 5th grade math started off some getting-to-know-you challenges. This gave us a chance to learn names and start to learn how to work together. We also created our Community of Mathematicians' Expectations, which guides the way we work together. Last week we also learned a card game called To 100, and mathematicians played in table groups. This week, mathematicians will learn another game working with products and factors, We'll continue these types of activities next week, do some pre-assessments and create pieces of art relating to our thinking about math.
Ask, what strategies helped you to get a lower score in To 100?
Listen to your mathematician tell you about his or her mindswirl (thinking about math) project.
Extend the learning by getting a deck of cards, take the face cards out and play TO 100.
Best,
Gretchen
