Families, be sure to look at the pictures as a way to discuss and reflect on the experience with your Merlin.
Field Studies
We had 4 field studies, Earth, Water, Animals and Forest.
- In the Earth field study we used the sun to create a model of how the gravitational pull affects the tides. Then, we created giant maps of Oregon in the sand, during low tide. The field study ended by examining compost!
- With out getting too wet, the Merlins looked at water quality of different bodies of water on Magruder’s campus, caught macroinvertebrates and journeyed through the water cycle.
- During our Animal field study we learned about behavioral and physical adaptations by dissecting squid. What an experience! Then, we ventured onto the beach to dig for mole crabs. We found a bunch and talked about their adaptations too.
- Our last field study was the Forest. We learned what it takes for trees to survive, learned how to identify cedars, hemlocks, sword ferns, lady ferns, salal and evergreen huckleberry—yum! We hiked to the top of a bill where we had the most beautiful view of coast, and Magruder’s forest. One reason Magruder exists is because of a jetty built over 100 years ago. It’s quite a story.
Listen to your kiddo talk about all the other parts of the Outdoor School experience, recreation, cabins, meals, campfire, Life and Death in the Forest, interest groups, etc!
Extend the learning to come up with your own outdoor adventure as a family.
This week:
We're back to our school routines this week. I know there will be a little re-teaching after our week away, but families you can help by making sure you kiddo gets back into homework.
Writing: Type up poetry on Google Classroom
Math: Daily assignment per teacher
Reading: Newsletter on Monday and book of your choice for the other evenings.
Agenda: Fill it out and get it signed nightly!
5th Grade Math
Mathematicians will be taking their first test on Wednesday. Our next unit will explore division and place value! Starting this week, parent Markus Roberts will invite a group of students to tackle more challenging math problems 1-2 times/week.
Ask - Do you feel ready for your test? Can I help you review some of the problems on your practice test?
Listen - To your mathematician describe how to use the multiplication algorithm.
Extend the learning by making up multiplication word problems at home.
6th Grade Math
Mathematicians learned our process for test taking, which includes test corrections, retake and getting the test signed by the parents. Hopefully you saw your child's test last week. If not, you'll hear from me soon, but you could start the process and check in with your kiddo. We also moved into our 2nd block which focuses on multiplying and dividing with decimals. We also review steps to multi digit multiplication and long division.
Ask, did you fulfill your end of block requirements?
Listen to your child discuss steps to multiplying decimal numbers.
Extend the learning by showing how multiplication and long division happen in your life.
