Conferences are this Thursday and Friday! Students have been busy preparing goals to share with you at this week. Call the office to reserve your spot!
Homework This Week
- Reading: Read the newsletter Monday, and reading of choice Tuesday and through the week!
- Writing: students will have a special assignment - to write a letter to themselves about Outdoor School. This letter should be turned in on Wednesday (please address the envelope, but do not stamp or seal it!) The letter will actually be sent to them when they reach High School as an invitation to be a student leader.
- Math: expect an 10-20 minute assignment Monday & Tuesday.
Project
We visited Fernhill Wetlands this week and started to learn about the amazing way that Clean Water Services treats our wastewater in a natural way. Students will be doing ecological research (secret word) there this year to determine whether the ecosystem is becoming healthier and more biodiverse.

Literacy
This week, Merlins finished reading love that dog, making inferences and discussing the importance of summarizing along the way. In poetry, we looked at syllables and structure, exploring haiku as a method of celebrating nature and limerick as a way to tell a funny story in only five lines. We also had our first week of spelling homework and our first test.
Ask, what is your favorite way to figure out syllables? How many syllables are in your favorite food? Your name?
Extend the learning by writing a haiku about a special place, or a limerick about someone in your family.
5th Grade Math
This week, fifth graders practiced breaking up a multiplication problem using partial products. We used this method to make estimates about important life questions like, "how many mini marshmallows would it take to cover every desk in the classroom?" This week will be our first test. To get ready, students had time to complete a practice test, grade themselves, and fix errors. We talked about what being a good scholar looks like when it comes to fifth grade math; it is your job to try to notice when you don't understand something and ask for help!
Ask: what is the partial product method? How would you use it to find the size of your bedroom?
Talk about the difference between an inch a square inch and a cubic inch!
6th Grade Math
This week, sixth graders finished preparing for their first test and knocked it out of the park, later in the week we did corrections and retakes! Next week we will dive into Block Two and start learning how to multiply and divide with decimals!
Ask: What was easy about block one? What was challenging? What's the deal with stacks?
