Goal reflection is due by Friday--be sure to review your child's Google document, specifically look over Literacy goals! Do the goals look good to you? What do I still need to provide you with?
This week's project work took on a variety of shapes and forms. One thing we did was create a vision board for our goals from goal setting--this means finding a way to visually represent a goal so it can be referenced frequently. I am hoping this reminds kiddos of their goals! For water, we had an interesting development in Merlin Valley--a woman contacted the residents of Merlin Valley to see if they'd be willing to sell the land to a development company. And, even though our O&A was canceled, we still took a thorough look at our human watershed--mapping out the certain features we've learned about and seeing if we could map out the path water takes.
Ask how does water get into our homes and back to nature?
Talk about your concerns with the ARGO company coming to Merlin Valley.
Extend the learning to see the function and values on companies within Forest Grove.
Literacy
A lot of our work time this week was focused on finishing up writing our Leaf Pack study as well vision boards and building macroinvertebrates. Next week we start our editorial writing unit which will take us basically all the way to winter break! Merlins will think about how to persuade the reader to make better choices with water. I look forward to seeing how creativity, tone and information are put together. Flush is about to wrap up and we'll be into our own books regarding nature and environmentalism soon.
Ask why do you think Carl Hiassen wrote Flush?
Talk about how to change someone's opinion or how to persuade someone.
Extend the learning to read editorials as a family and discuss what makes them persuasive and what doesn't.
6th grade Math
After wrapping up multiplying and dividing decimals, we've begun our long study of fractions. I enjoy helping kids see the benefit of number sense like divisibility rules for numbers 1-12. There's so much one can do if they have a basic understanding of their math facts. For instance if you know your multiples of 3, you will know the number 342 is divisible by 3. Why? Because 3+4+2+ = 9, and 9 is multiple of 3, so 342 is divisible by 3! Having a strong foundation of number sense will help us do what seem like complicated steps with fractions. Be aware all Block 2 test components are due Tuesday, the 6th. Please don't simply sign the test, but review the test with your child. Celebrate their strengths and help fix misconceptions.
Ask what is the GCF of 36 and 12?
Talk about FFEF.
Extend the learning to look at equivalent fractions and dividing decimals.
5th grade Math
I hope families were able to take a minute to review and sign the our Unit 1 Multiplication test this past week. If not, keep an eye out for it this week! Many students worked hard to fix misconceptions they had and show me their new learning with the retake. We're moving on to decimals numbers. This week, we learned some nifty tricks to multiply and divide by powers of 10 by jumping the decimal point left or right.
Ask what is 2.5 x 10? x100? How do you know.
Talk about how to figure out which way to shift the decimal point.
Extend the learning by practicing calculations with money!
