News of the Week
Literacy
- Students are to dedicate writing homework time to editing and revising their poetry.
Our writing focus last week was polishing our poetry. Our main revision lessons were on using imagery (showing not telling,) thinking how to use stanzas that best fit our poems, and
having strong leads and conclusions. We’ll continue revising this week with our big, celebratory event
to happen Thursday night. The schedule is below, it just lists the Merlins reading. Kestrels will be mixed in with us too. I created the schedule based on what I heard from parents. If I didn’t hear from you, I just assigned you a random spot! Please let me know ASAP if you need something different.
Expectations of the Night: This is a special evening and we look forward to celebrating your hard work as a poet. So, please sit with your family-until you're called up to read. Be professional and courteous to other poets. No horse play within the facility or outside. Limit yourself to one beverage and snack.
Session 1: Please arrive to the UCC church at 5:55. Show runs from 6:00-6:40.

Session 2: Please arrive to the UCC church at 6:55. Show runs from 7:00-7:40.

Our focus this week in our nature-adventure stories is to examine how point of view impacts
the story. We’ll learn about the different points of view and then try to think deeply as to how the
point of view effects the story.
Ask, how far away are you from meeting the 13 poems that need to be submitted by Friday?
Listen to your child practice his/her poem for the Coffee House event.
Extend the learning by reading favorite poems or writing poems together as a family. Or, read
a nature adventure story as a family.
Systems: Nature and Design
A highlight from last week was doing an In and About that Erin created where kids had to plan how
they’d use a 400 acre piece of land. Each group member had a different desire for the land: timber,
biologist, nature enthusiast, etc. It was fun hearing groups decide how they would meet everyone’s
wants for the land. This week, we’ll look deeper into forestry practices and how nature keeps forests
healthy.
Ask, how did your group use your 400 acre piece of land?
Listen to some of the unintended consequences of conventional agriculture.
Extend the learning by researching inventions inspired using biomimicry.
6th Grade Math
On Monday I will return the Block 2 test to students. We took time on Thursday to fix our mistakes and review concepts. On Friday students had time to retake the problems they got wrong on a different version of the test. The trickiest concepts were knowing the correct label for area, perimeter and volume, using formulas like interest and distance, and how to apply the distributive property in algebraic expressions. Luckily these concepts will be covered again in the next block. I would appreciate families going over misconceptions with their child and signing the test--they should be returned by Friday the 20th.
Ask your child to show you the test and go over successes and struggles.
Listen to your child explain how the distributive property works in the expression 5(x-4)
Extend the learning by writing expressions that apply to your life.
5th Grade Math
Last week we spent time wrapping up this unit and solidifying our understanding of volume and multiplication strategies through discussions, independent practice and partner work. Last week, we also looked at division story problems with remainders, working on strategies for multi-digit dividends and reasonable solutions for handling the remainder. We will kick this week off with a final review session and discussion around this unit before mathematicians take this unit's post-test. Students will be asked to complete the test (started in class on Wednesday because of an all day O&A on Tuesday) as homework on Tuesday night with no additional resources. Please support you student by locating a quiet place to complete the test. This is not a time to help them on the assignment. We will begin our new unit on fractions and common denominators beginning Thursday. On Friday we will take time to go over the corrected unit test and discuss questions, along with the fraction unit work. Students that dod not get 80% or above upon the unit test can use the break to review and practice in order to retest the week we return.
Ask how do you feel about the test review and the upcoming test? What is still tricky?
Listen to your mathematician review the concepts and skills from this unit through the review sheet; after Wednesday, describe their experience with the post test.
Extend the learning by... During the Thanksgiving's Break, cook together, focusing on the fractions.
