11/21 - 11/25: No School --Thanksgiving Break
Project: We had an epic urban adventure on Tuesday. We ventured into Portland to attend Mercy's Corps Water Awareness program. Kids were able to explore the exhibits to try and determine what Mercy Corps does. Then, the program leader had us play a giant trivia game to learn more about global water issues, which culminated in a team building game. The team building game required the class figure out how to get water (marbles) down a set of pipes. A very cool way to put together all that we learned about what it takes to get water to those who need it.
Ask how do you think about water after your visit to Mercy Corps?
Listen to some of the facts we learned about water issues during our O&A.
Extend the learning by researching into Mercy Corps water programs.
Literacy: We used our writing time to wrap up our Leaf Pack Inquiry and start thinking about water editorial project. This first inquiry was basically done together, as a class, and my hope is that they'll write another one at the end of the year based on our Fernhill project. We are getting so close to the end of Flush. We wrapped up our look at tone and mood. This week we'll practice our ability to tell a succinct summary of Flush and the our independent study book. Check for your child's reading goal to be signed this week. It is due on Friday.
Ask what do you want to do your water editorial on?
Listen to your child summarize Flush or their own independent study book.
Extend the learning by practicing succinct summaries.
6th Grade Math: Although it was a short math week, it's was fun kicking off the fraction unit. Kids seem to remember a lot of great information from last year, which I hope means we'll be able to go farther than years past. We reviewed some basic information about fractions and had a successful day looking at equivalent fractions through our favorite Fundamental Facts about Equivalent Fractions!
Ask what is FFEF?
Listen to your child explain how a fraction is a point on the number line and what the numerator and denominator tell you.
Extend the learning by showing your child how fractions appear in your everyday life!
5TH Grade Math-
Just knee deep in our fraction and decimals unit, we used the short week last week to review some basic information about fractions - how to convert from improper and proper fractions and vice versa, what the denominator and numerator tell you and adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. We reviewed FFEF in order to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators and spent time to learn the reasoning behind adding and subtracting mixed numbers. A proficiency check on Thursday shows me we will need to use the beginning of this week for more review and practice of addition and especially subtraction of mixed numbers with regrouping.
ASK Your child to explain how to solve 10 2/7 - 5 5/9 using the most efficient way.
LISTEN to your child explain why we first took the time to write every step when subtracting or adding mixed numbers.
EXTEND the learning by looking for ways fractions are used in everyday life.
