Goal reflection is due by Friday--be sure to review your child's Google document, specifically look over Literacy goals! Do the goals look good to you? What do I still need to provide you with?
A highlight of the week was doing our Water Awareness Walk for Tuesday's Out and About. We watched a few videos to get background as to how people our age have to walk up to 3 miles a day facing lions and war to access water. And, water that might not even be drinkable! For these individuals, so much time is lost in accessing water they lose on their education or other pursuits. Pretty astounding. So, we headed to the B Street Trail and asked kids to walk along the paved path-- 1/4 of a mile. After each length they received a fate card. Was the water hole dry? Was the water contaminated? Were they fatigued, sick? Did they get lost? Did they spill water? Had there been a rainstorm? They simulated the consequence and if they were lucky, gained gallons of water (through beads). What a powerful experience! As a class we traveled 51 miles, but only obtained 248 gallons of water--that's not even enough water required to make a pound of oats!
Ask what's your thought on water after the water walk?
Talk about how easy it is to take water and education for granted.
Extend the learning to learn more about the countries and areas affected by drought.
Literacy
We finished Flush!! And the crowd went wild! I mean seriously, how lucky am I to get to enjoy a fun piece of literature with 27 amazing kids. When the book ended we all cheered and gave a standing ovation. We are wrapping up our final thoughts on the book and will move into our independent books next week. Two big concepts for the end of a book include--how to give a summary without rambling or judgement and think about the theme (or big message of the book).
As writers we are starting to turn our wheels on next big writing project--choosing a topic about water to write an editorial. One way we teach writing an editorial (secret word) is through exposing kiddos to lots of good examples, where they can be inspired and steal like an artist. This would be a great assignment to pull out those writing goals and see how you can support your kiddo. A go-to structure for the project is to write an introduction, 3 body paragraphs and a conclusion. Stay tuned for more information on all those parts in the coming weeks.
Ask, why do you think Carl wrote Flush?
Talk about what makes a persuasive editorial?
Extend the learning by reading editorials as a family.
6th Grade Math
Our study of fractions continues. This week we have looked at equivalent and simplifying/reducing fractions, least common multiple, comparing fractions and improper fraction / mixed number. We'll be wrapping up this until before Thanksgiving, so that when we return we can start operation work with fractions.
Ask, what is the LCD of 1/5 and 3/7 ?
Talk about the tricks to comparing fractions?
Extend the learning by having fun races to see what method is faster to finding GCF or LCM, lists or prime factorization.
