Project
We continued our exploration of the human body by looking at circulation and respiration. A few concepts of the week included holistic health with an O&A doing yoga with Yamhill County's SNACK program which helps to educate kids about nutrition and exercise. I loved seeing the focus as the Merlins tried out a new activity, like yoga. Connecting the mind and body is so important. We measured our tidal and vital capacity of our lungs and even monitored our breathing and pulse by doing different activities like coloring, team-building and exercise. On top of all that, kids picked have a training plan to work on their growth mindset health goal.
Ask, what's your growth mindset goal?
Talk about what kids will need to do at home to reach their health goal.
Extend the learning to find local programs that address holistic health.
Literacy
The Merlins have been impressive writers this week as they grapple with their state testing and memoir. I am impressed with their perseverance and determination as they test. And, many are grabbing onto the ideas presented in the memoirs we've read which serve as mentor texts. Starting out memoirs with reflections makes for a great memoir. On Tuesday, the 8th, we'll head back to Jennings McCall to share our stories so far. Kids are asked to bring a photo or artifact to go along with that memory to share with their elder buddy. On top of all that, we started our last literature circle of the year. At least 2 of the groups really dislike their main character---and rightly so! I always love hearing what kids have to say about the books they read.
Ask, what memory are you sharing for your memoir. What did you learn about life, when you think of that memory.
Talk about what lit circle book they are reading and how it connects to health.
Extend the learning by sharing important memories.
6th Grade Math
We finished our unit on stats! Kids need to make sure their test corrections, retake and tests are signed and returned to me by Friday the 11th! That is homework in addition to our algebra lessons we'll be starting on Monday. I love algebra and can't wait to get into with the kids!
Ask how did the stats go for you?
Talk about what is harder to make a histogram or box-and-whisker plot?
Extend the learning by trying out stats at home.
5th Grade Math
My highlight of our math week was seeing students create fabulous original Input/Output Robots. Each robot each had a mathematical rule, which students represented using an expression (example: INPUT x 5 + 2 = OUTPUT). Students were challenged to guess one another's functions using observation, trial and error, and order of operations practice.
Ask what strategies did you use to guess the robots' functions?
Talk about why is the rule " (INPUT + 1) / 2" have the same results as the rule "(INPUT x 1/2) + 1/2"?
