5/6 Fund Run
State Testing will take this place for both 5th and 6th grades. This week, students will be finishing up the “Reading Performance Task” which is basically what we practiced with the uniform essay and starting the “English Language Arts Computer Assisted Test” which is more short passages with accompanying questions.
How you can help your child this week during testing:
- Encourage your child to relax and do his/her best.
- Help your child get a good night’s rest.
- Staying hydrated and eating nutritious food will also help fuel your child’s success.
Literacy
- Writing homework this week: work on memoir.
With the short week, O&A and testing, there wasn’t a lot of literacy time this week. But, we examined what made for an effective memoir and read about body systems and took notes. We’ll continue on the same path this week, with hopefully a little more memoir writing time.
Ask, what makes for a quality, effective, memoir?
Listen to how your child structured his/her notes for the body systems.
Extend the learning by reading and discussing a realistic fiction story as a family.
Project
This last week we looked at the nervous system. We learned parts of the brain and a neuron. Our O&A to Ernie Reyes Martial Arts Studio was a perfect outing. It combined our muscular/skeletal knowledge with knowing that it takes a strong brain to show respect and discipline to do the moves correctly.
Ask, what did you enjoy most about the O&A?
Listen to your child explain what he/she enjoyed most about the nervous system stations?
Extend the learning by researching what steps your family could take to be healthier.
6th Grade Math
Percents were the name of the game last week. Guess what, they are closely related to fractions! We worked between fractions, decimals and percents. We learned how to find the percent of a number and how percents come into our everyday life, like through taxes, discounts, etc. Don’t forget, Block 5 tests, corrections, retake and signatures are due on Monday!
Ask what is 62% of 45?
Listen to your child explain which method he/she prefers to answering the question above, multiplying by decimals or turning it into a fraction problem.
Extend the learning by looking at how percents are a part of our everyday life.
5th Grade Math-
This week, 5th graders continue their in-depth look at long division with remainders. We will spend time connecting the procedure we learned last week to the standard algorithm for long division. We will spend time making sure everyone understands the steps for the algorithm and end the week with test on long division with remainders.
Don't forget, Fraction Unit 3 retakes, reflections and retakes due Monday.
ASK- Solve 4069 divided by 23 using the long procedure.
LISTEN to your mathematician explain how the long division algorithm is a more efficient way to do the longer procedure and how they correspond.
EXTEND make up division story problems with 4 digit dividends and 2 digit divisors.
