Writing: Spelling activity 1/ day. Memoirs are overdue - work on them at home if you have not yet finished! Optional homework would be to use WeVideo at home to create their digital story memoir.
Reading: The usual - read the newsletter as a family on Monday. Other nights, book of choice!
Math: Daily math homework. 5th grade - correct, retake & sign Unit 5 tests this week.
Other--Health and Safety: This week we will be starting our school's "child protection unit" which challenges kids to think about safe decision making and reporting of incidents. I will send home "Home Link" worksheets that can allow for more conversations to take place at home. Contact me if you have any questions about this, or this week's puberty lesson, which will be led by Vanessa.
We are excited to be going to Hagg Lake, next week Tuesday the 29th, for an all day O&A for kids. The goal is to experience ways to enjoy physical, mental and social/emotional health outdoors! We are able to offer fishing to kids--however if the child is over the age of 12, she/he will need a fishing license to participate! Fishing gear is not necessary. We are looking to see if any other parents want to help chaperone the trip or even lead a station for a fitting outdoor activity! It's gonna be a great day. Please personally email me right away if you want to participate.
Based on your input, we have decided to host our end-of-year fundraiser on the evening of Friday, June 8th. We will ask students to volunteer for either a 4:30 or 6:00 shift, and hope that many parents can attend to eat delicious snacks, celebrate the year and help raise funds for next year's Outdoor School! More information to come.
Project Work: Did you know that your digestive system snakes for almost 9 meters through your body, taking 30 hours to process food? This week, we learned about the organs of the digestive system, then watched part of a film called "In Defense of Food," which got us thinking about how to make food choices that will keep your body feeling its best. We really enjoyed our afternoon at Nana Cardoons where we made delicious whole grain bread to eat with hummus.
Ask what surprised your watching "In Defense of Food"?
Talk about how to make sense of nutrition labels.
Extend the learning by planning and cooking a healthy meal as a family that includes Omega-3-rich leafy greens and protein or whole grains.
Literacy: Merlins had to dig deep this week for the final stretch of their memoir, using my feedback to elaborate on their memoirs and create a meaningful storyline. This week, students that finished will get to start crafting a Digital Story incorporating sound and images, while others will continue to revise. For reading, we are continuing to enjoy how the main characters of our books deal with real issues and how it affects their health.
Ask what is happening in your lit circle book? What do you like about the author's writing style?
Talk about your kiddo's progress on their memoir. How does reading a story out loud help with revision?
Extend the learning by working on your Digital Story at home. Students will have the option to find old photographs to personalize their stories - send these to your fgcs.org email to use them at school.
6th Grade Math
We’ve got this week to go before we start math state testing. So, we’ll keep plugging along with our algebra study. Last week we learned the steps to solving equations: isolate the variable by using the inverse operation on both sides. And, show your lines! These phrases remind them of the procedures to successful solves!
Ask what operation do you use to solve a multiplication expression?
Talk about the importance of showing your work for solving equations.
Extend the learning to set up equations for purchases you make.
5th Grade Math: While state tests are coming next week, 5th graders should feel proud to have completed the final in-class test this year! Yeehaw! That means that this week's homework will be to correct tests and get a signature from families. And, as always, strive to raise your score to proficient by completing the retest! Families, please help your 5th graders with this goal by looking over test errors with them, or getting them to school early so that I can help out!
Ask what was the toughest problem on the Unit 5 test? What was a breeze?
Talk about all the math work we've done this year. What do you want to review this week before the state test?
Extend the learning by visiting a food truck this week. (Ask your 5th grader to tell you why!)
