Homework
Students will have reading, spelling and math this week. The rough draft of the research paper will be due Friday the 17th.
5th Grade Math
Fifth graders reviewed the order of operations, functions and word problems before diving into a test on Friday. We'll be finishing up this week, and starting a fun end-of-year project. That means, families, look out for tests coming home Wednesday. Students will be expected to correct errors, reflect on the unit, and get the test signed. They will have a few days to re-take the test if needed.
Ask, which part of the test was most challenging?
Talk about how to react when you get a graded test back. How can you feel positive about a lower score than you hoped, and how can you show respect to others in the class?Literacy
Students have been enjoying balancing their literacy time with reading their literature circle book related to ancient civilizations and outlining for their ancient civilization research paper. To help students, we focused on how to write topic sentences and a concise, yet powerful thesis.
Ask for your literature circle book, how is perspective (1st person / 3rd person) affecting how the story is told?
Talk about the importance of a solid topic sentence.
Extend the learning by finding books to read for the summer and looking for topic sentences in newspaper, etc.
Project
We blasted to Ancient Greece this week and looked at how a famous archeologist tried to uncover the lost city of Troy. Based on maps and some initial clues students made predictions for three different places. Luckily, no one picked the location in Egypt! Then, they had to build artifacts "uncovered" at those locations. We still need to debrief our findings before moving on to Ancient Rome. Another big aspect of our project work this week was our research at Fernhill. We had beautiful weather and made the most of our time to wrap our year's research. Now, we have the hard job of making sense of our data to put together our presentation which takes place next week Tuesday, the 21st at Clean Water Services in Hillsboro.
Ask what does your study show in terms of the health of Fernhill?
Talk about the importance of doing long-term research to monitor habitats like Fernhill.
Extend the learning to make plans of investigating different ecosystems this summer.
6th Grade Math
These kiddos are cruising through algebra topics! Last week we looked at the distributive property and how that relates to simplifying expressions. I've enjoyed seeing their enthusiasm for this new content.
Ask, how does algebra relate to solving problems about batting averages, interest and distance?
Talk about how one simplifies expressions.
Extend the learning to making algebra fit everyday situations.
