Homework - It seems a lot of the class is starting to falter with homework. I am glad to support homework by kids coming to my classroom in the morning, starting at 8:10. If you child isn't getting stars in their agenda, then they aren't meeting homework expectations.
Goals: There is a NEW reflection to check out! As a family, log on to your child's Google Classroom and ask them to share their new goal reflection! This online document will be a way for your Level 3-er to track their progress on goals this spring. Please support them by looking at new entries each Monday and adding thoughts about successes or goals they have at home.
Writing: Monday, work on your essay. Spelling--for real this week--kids will pick their own words.
Reading: The usual - read the newsletter as a family on Monday. Read a book of your choice the other nights, or catch up on lit circle if you fall behind.
Math: Daily math homework - check your child's agenda or contact teacher
Project
Which colony would you prefer to live and why? This question guided our research and understanding of the 3 different regions to Colonial America. All regions had similarities but unique differences set them apart in terms of industries, resources, and climate. With this background of the different regions we will so learn about the tension that started to build between colonists Great Britain.
Ask which region would you prefer to live in, why?
Talk about why your family chose to live in Oregon?
Extend the learning by doing more in-depth research on a favorite colony.
Literacy
Merlins worked hard as readers and writers to find evidence for their expository essays on how the Native Americans had a different experience compared to European colonists. And, of course there was our expository rap at Friday's All School Meeting.
Ask why is it important to cite sources when you write informative essays?
Talk about the formula to writing a strong essay-- BTP, body paragraphs, TSS
Extend the learning by finding sources for other components
6th Grade Math
Showing our work, what does this mean? For those working on geometry it means making sure you've followed the right formula and then labeled the answer correctly. Students working on ratios are making sure to set up equivalent fractions. And, for those starting on rates they're showing how fractions and decimals are related through division.
Ask, why is showing work important?
Talk about what concept is hardest for you in your current block?
Extend the learning by showing mathematical work you do? Budget, comparing prices, etc.
5th Grade Math
Test time is coming, so how can you feel ready to do your best? My recipe starts with some practice - ask your 5th grader to see the "Practice Test" that will come home Monday or Tuesday. These questions mirror the ones they'll see on Thursday's test, so encourage them to take the time to understand them confidently! Next step, get a good breakfast and relax - the test is just an interesting puzzle to tackle, and you'll always have that retake opportunity. P.S, did you know that your brain grows even more when you make mistakes than when you get a problem right?
Ask, what happens when you divide a whole number by a decimal? (What's the decimal dance?)
Talk about what can you do if you get stuck on a problem?
Extend the learning by watching videos online to review the topics that are hanging you up.
