Project
It was great to have the class back after a lovely winter break. We kicked off our first day back with lots of team-building. First, we read quotes from what CEOs had to say when they look to hire people for their company. What was awesome was how closely the words matched to our classroom expectations! Then, Merlins assembled a puzzle (each person had a unique piece) locking our goals for the rest of the year together. I loved hearing metaphors they said that related to the class fitting together like a puzzle. Then, Amy had us laughing and working together to accomplish “apple relay races.” I enjoyed seeing kids work with someone they may not always choose as a partner. We’ll start getting into our social studies project this week. Stay tuned, it’s gonna be great!
Ask, What team-building seemed important to you this week and why?
Talk about why an employer would want to hire someone with strong character traits.
Extend the learning by thinking what qualities you want to focus on this year.
Literacy
Literacy took us outside the classroom this week. First, our ELC buddies were excited to see us again while we continue to share our love of reading with them. Then, we were able to meet the author the Oracle series-he gave a pretty dynamic presentation about his series. He talked about his books and what interests in life pushed him to pursue writing. If your child wants to order a book, they should bring money to school by Thursday of next week. On this day, the author will be back to sign copies. We also shared our Council of All Beings and had some fun passing paragraphs!
Ask, What was most interesting the Oracle series presentation?
Talk about the paragraph passing activity that we did to remember parts to a paragraph.
Extend the learning by taking turns writing paragraphs as a family.
6th Grade Math
Sixth graders are still hard at work in fractions—some are taking time to understand how to add and subtract mixed numbers with regrouping. Others are working on multiplying and dividing by fractions. And others are seeing how rates relate to fractions. Please check in with your kiddo on a regular basis (weekly at least) to see what they are up to. Everyone should be setting aside 15 minutes of math work each night. A highlight for me was doing a whole group math lesson where kids had to share their rationale for going through the problem-solving steps.
Ask, Was your math challenge the pizza question or field racing problem?
Talk about the 4 different steps to problem solving.
Extend the learning by looking at perimeters of different shapes—this relates to the field-racing problem.
5th Grade Math
We jumped right back into fractions last week - thanks to many students for bringing their game and getting back into a homework routine! This week, we will touch on some final fraction concepts and start reviewing for a test the following week. Keep up your practice so you are confident with your skills!
Ask - which is larger, 5 divided by 1/3 or 5 multiplied 1/3?
Talk about what are the steps to add mixed numbers?
Extend the learning at home by doubling or halving a recipe.
