Monday PE | Tuesday In & About Lab | Wednesday Art | Thursday Geek Out ELC? Valentine's Day | Friday ART |
- Monday, 2/18 - President's Day, no school.
- Thursday, 2/21 - Celebration of Learning, 5-6:30. Level 3 will share our science fair!
- April 1st - Returning Student Form due to secure your current student's spot for next school year.
Students will have math homework, reading and and spelling this week, as well as an online goal reflection (SSC) to share with you. If we have snow days in the coming week(s) your kiddo could put some time into their fantasy or slides for Geek Out, which are both on Google Classroom.
Kindness Week
While kindness is important every day, at FGCS, we celebrate Kindness Week once a year as a chance to bring some extra joy to our community. The Merlins have brainstormed some ways that they hope to share gratitude (mystery word), compassion and inspiration with our community. What can you do to bring Kindness Week home?
On Thursday, students will have an opportunity to share valentines at the end of the day. We ask that you not send candy to school, and that if you decide to bring valentines, you bring one for the entire class! Here is a list of the 27 amazing Merlins:

Project
Chemistry continued this week with a lab exploring exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions. Students showed great collaboration and science skills. Geek Out is really heating up as our Science Fair approaches. Merlins, if you aren't ready to present your research yet, this is the week to bring your focus and get your project done.
Ask, what's an example of an exothermic reaction?
Talk about which variables they altered to design the dream ice cream recipe.
Extend the learning by working together to prepare for the science fair.
Literacy
For reading this week we worked on our discussion of characters. What a great discussion we had focusing on our thoughts, questions and epiphanies! For our fantasy story, we worked on some important skills, like how to weave dialogue smoothly into your story and when to start a new paragraph.
Ask, how are you showing characterization in your fantasy?
Talk about the biggest challenge you have with writing your fantasy story.
Extend the learning by debating one of the big questions in Tuck Everlasting - would you choose immortality?
6th Grade Math
By now, sixth graders should be able to articulate the difference between perimeter, area, surface area and volume. And, we are also understand the importance of being able to correctly label our answers. Because 24 units is different than 24 units2 which is different than units3. After some review and further application we’ll be taking our test!
Ask, what is the formula for volume of a rectangular prism?
Talk about why labeling correctly is so important.
Extend the learning by examining the volume and surface area of containers at home.
5th Grade Math
Have you ever been fooled by a bad deal when shopping? This week, we reviewed the procedures for multi-digit multiplication. Then, we extended our learning to decimal multiplication. We used this new skill to analyze some unfortunate advertisements that made multiplication errors with money. As we tackle decimal multiplication and division, we'll focus on how important these skills can be in making smart decisions around money.
Ask, what's the rule for multiplying decimals. Show me! 5 x 0.3 = ? What about 1.2 x 0.8 ?
Extend the learning by keeping an eye out for mathematical mistakes in ads or retail signs in Forest Grove. I offered a classroom economy bonus to anyone that brings a photo of one for us to analyze in class!
