*Students will have math, reading & spelling homework this week. Obtaining a parent signature is part of homework. The reading packets will come home this week as well! Please return by Friday.
Goal reflection is due by Friday--be sure to review your child's Google document, specifically look over Stewardship, Scholarship and Citizenship goals! Do the goals look good to you? What do I still need to provide you with?
Project
A focus for this week was looking at how weather moves across Oregon. We designed weather maps that show how the cycle could potentially start off the coast of Oregon and go through a process of orographic lift which explains the wet and dry areas of our state. This will be part of the way we present at the All School Meeting on Friday.
Ask, what is orographic lift?
Talk about O&A from Tuesday where we saw the waste water treatment process.
Extend the learning to look climates in other parts of the world.
Literacy
As writers we took extra time to make sure everyone had a solid outline for their water editorial. And, on Friday we took a stab at writing our introduction. My hope this week is for us to get our 3 body paragraphs written, that might be a little over zealous though. J Merlins are enjoying their new books! Last week we looked at characters and found evidence to back up our ideas. Because I had to leave early on Monday, I didn’t send home the Flush evaluations. I will send these out Monday.
Ask, what are the three parts to a good introduction?
Talk about how your kiddo plans to make their editorial sound—what’s the tone or mood of the writing.
Extend the learning by evaluation editorials in the newspaper together!
6th Grade Math
Block 3 tests will head home on Monday for review and signatures. And, we’ve already started on block 4—adding and subtracting fractions. It’s important for kids to realize the concept behind why denominators stay the same when adding/subtracting fractions. We set aside time last week to conceptualize that!
Ask why do you not add or subtract the denominators when adding and subtracting fractions.
Talk about the Block 3 test and what skills you can continue practicing with Block 4.
Extend the learning to have races as to who can add and subtract fractions faster—the LCD method or just the CD method.
5th Grade Math
Fifth graders brought their focus this week as we reviewed a few final decimal skills before our test this week. We learned how to round to any place, and how to line up the decimals when adding and subtracting.
Ask, what does "five or more, raise the score" mean? Show me an example - how do you round 19.64 to the nearest tenth? One?
Extend the learning by doing some adding and subtracting at the grocery store this week.
