Project
Two main highlights for our project work this week--getting ready for the All School Meeting and our first simulation to kick off our Ancient Civilization unit. I always appreciate their enthusiasm for coming up with an idea to present to the school--it feels like a good fit for this age group. There's also a good dose of chaos mixed in as we become actors as well as scholars. Our first simulation allowed kids to see the advantages of farming over hunting and gathering.
Ask, did your tribe survive have enough food to survive the first simulation?
Talk about how the simulation showed the difference between hunting/gathering over farming.
Extend the learning to research about the first farming civilization.
Literacy
Our literacy time was a mixture of preparing for goal setting conferences, preparing for our All School Meeting skit and working on our argument for persuading others to keep our current system of changing the clocks in the fall and spring. We start the reading test next week--help your student be successful. The best ways to ensure this---a good night's rest, a healthy, protein rich breakfast, and lots of positive encouragement!
Ask how are you feeling about next week's test?
Talk about strategies to keep calm and get rid of incorrect answers.
Extend the learning to explore careers that have standardized tests associated with them.
6th Grade Math
Our math blocks seem to be going fast as we continue other topics related to fractions. Students did well with the rate test and now we're doing our last fraction application with percents and probability. Be on the look out tests to sign and misconceptions that need to be fixed.
Ask, what's the importance of the framework when it comes to solving rates?
Talk about the last problem where rates and distance had to be used to compare the speed of two kids.
Extend the learning to doing complicated conversion rates.
5th Grade Math
We found our way on the coordinate plane this week, one of my favorite fifth grade topics. Follow one of these links to practice this math skill in a fun way: Fruit Graph, Target Practice, or Mini Golf.
Ask, how do you remember the x and y axis, and which comes first in an ordered pair?
Extend the learning at one of the links above!
