Conference Wrap Up: Thank you so much for taking the time to be a part of your goal sharing process! I enjoyed hearing your conversations. All the time and effort the kids put into their conference seemed worth it. If you have any feedback, be sure to let me know!
Project Work
Merlins enjoyed a rich, yet short week focused on our Healthy Bodies unit. Tuesday afternoon we traveled to Hillsboro to visit the Ernie Reyes Mixed Martial Arts Studio. There we learned how discipline + respect, along with exercise can help create a healthy mind and body. Then, on Wednesday we attended the Man / Woman performance by Oregon Ballet Theatre. The show asked us to challenge our preconceived notions about genders as well as how we pictured strength and beauty. During these trips we utilized public transportation and learned about different ways to travel throughout the area. All of these experiences were intended to bring the musculoskeletal system to life!
Ask, what are the major parts of the musculoskeletal system?
Talk about the different ways we saw that system in action last week--martial arts and ballet!
Extend the learning by creating a plan at home to care for your musculoskeletal system.
Literacy
There was little for literacy instruction last week with getting ready for conferences and our extended O&As. However, we did do some readings as a class about the musculoskeletal system and took time reflecting and writing about our goals! This upcoming week will be a combination of testing during our literacy block as well as doing some brainstorm writing for our memoir.
Ask what did you like about goals?
Talk about how you will keep the goals in mind for rest of the school year.
Extend the learning by reading about the human body.
6th Grade Math
We continued to work on statistics this past week, looking at dot plots, historgrams and box-and-whisker plots. We talked about ideas regarding how outliers affect the mean and median. And, I presented test scores, where the mode was also the maximum--I always find it interesting how one can use data to try to be persuasive! It's important for students to learn how to be critical thinkers regarding what they read, especially when stats are part of the argument.
Ask how a dot plot is created.
Talk about how the mean, median and mode can all represent data differently.
Extend the learning by writing a survey and collecting data, then analyze it!
5th Grade Math
Between reflecting on new skills and tests to prepare for conferences, and putting final touches on our coordinate plane projects, math flew by this week! Next week, we will start a small unit on our last math standard.
Ask is your coordinate project complete? What do you need to get it done?
