Last week we kicked off our health unit through a few different introductory activities. First, we made mixed media collages of what the word health meant. Then, we brainstormed as many questions as we had about health. As the week progressed we completed some sentence starters for areas of health: physical, mental, social / emotional.
Ask what were vitals for when you started your health focused Geek Out.
Talk about how your definitions of health differ.
Extend the learning by creating health goals as a family.
Literacy
A highlight of the week was going to Jennings McCall to meet our elder buddies. In order to get know a little about all of the buddies we played a bingo game. I was impressed with the bravery students showed, starting conversations with people they didn't know. Then, kids sat with a specific person and asked questions about their childhood. Students were able to share their stories too, which led to an interesting compare/contrast of the different times. I look forward to returning in early May to continue these friendships.
Ask what was your buddy's name?
Talk about things from their childhood you could relate to.
Extend the learning by hearing "memoir" type stories from other family members.
6th Grade Math
The week ended with us taking a look at our next mini unit--statistics. We'll be taking some different types of data to learn about concepts we discussed on Thursday, mean, median, mode and range as well as ways to graph data. On Thursday, some of us tried to see how many items we could memorize on a tray while others shot baskets.
Ask how do you find the mode? Remember the hint, the MOst often seen number?
Talk about how data can sometimes be misleading.
Extend the learning to write a survey to generate your own data.
