News of the Week
***We’ve got a week off of state testing!
Literacy
- Writing homework this week: work on memoir and digital story. Digital story is due May 31st.
This week seemed to fly by for literacy. There was reading about the immune system, writing interpretations of videos we saw to spark our creative juices, creating a final product for our ELC buddies and working on our memoirs and digital stories. This is the LAST week to work on the digital stories—about 3-4 class periods left. Most kids will want to record their digital story at home, just so they can have a quiet environment. They’ll be on display for Celebrations of Learning, June 1st.
Ask, are you done with your memoir, how does it compare to the checklist?
Listen to your child read his/her memoir
Extend the learning by reading and discussing a realistic fiction story or a memoir as a family.
Project
We had a lovely afternoon at Nana Cardoon’s on Tuesday which allowed us to see multiple ways of living a healthy life. One station had us making tortillas from scratch –just beautiful blue corn grown in the Willamette Valley and soaked in cal. Another station we used a refractometer to measure the level of brix—a ways to measure how much good stuff is in plant matter. Greens grown at Nana Cardoons were healthier than organic grocery store greens! In the last station we chopped up cardoons—an artichoke/celery looking plant. In the end we had a beautiful meal---black beans on our homemade tortilla with delicious salsa! What a treat! I really appreciate these O&As were students can see how lovely, simple, healthy living can be! We are so excited about our Fresh, Fit Feast taking place Tuesday June 7th!! Details coming soon!
Ask, what did you enjoy most Nana Cardoons?
Listen to your child explain how we made the tortillas.
Extend the learning by researching what steps your family could take to be healthier.
6th Grade Math
Because of the state math test, we didn’t have math this week. We’ll look at measures of center this week before taking our last part of the math test starting on the 31st.
5th Grade Math-
Last week, 5th graders worked on the state math test. This week, we will look at conversion of linear measurement and spend time reviewing volume, area and perimeter. We'll end the year spending some time reviewing concepts chosen by the 5th grade mathematicians. Next week 5th graders will take the last part of the state math test.
Ask your child to explain the difference between area, volume and perimeter.
Listen to your child share concepts that he or she asked to review.
Extend the learning by finding the area and perimeter of a room in your house or items around the house.
