News of the Week
State Testing will take this place for both 5th and 6th grades. This week, students will be starting the math test.
How you can help your child this week during testing:
- Encourage your child to relax and do his/her best.
- Help your child get a good night’s rest.
- Staying hydrated and eating nutritious food will also help fuel your child’s success.
Literacy
- Writing homework this week: work on memoir and digital story. The memoir was due on Friday the 13th. Digital story is due May 31st.
The Merlins are excited about the digital story. We took time to story board our ideas, then used a lot of writing time to work on the digital story. We Video is a user friendly web program. The order of works is: put in pictures, music, then add any special effects and then add narration and trim video so the narration fits the video.
My hope is to give memoirs back early in the week with feedback so Merlins can take time edit and revise to make the memoir sound its very best.
Our reading time was a combination of looking at Crash, reading about the digestive system and free reading. I did squeeze in a bit of poetry on Friday—poems written by young adults that dealt with issues we all face growing up. Then, the Merlins mimicked the poems to have them reflect themselves.
Ask, are you done with your memoir?
Listen to your talk about their digital story.
Extend the learning by reading and discussing a realistic fiction story or a memoir as a family.
Project
This last week we looked at the digestive system. Erin created a fun lab where we tried to decide if pop tarts, hot Cheetos and pretzels and were really food. It helped us have a discussion about what we should put into our bodies. We also examined food labels and make decisions about healthy meals.
Ask, what did you enjoy most about the digestive system labs?
Listen to your child discuss what makes food edible?
Extend the learning by researching what steps your family could take to be healthier.
6th Grade Math
This week we continued to look at ratios and started to look at rates. The cross multiplication algorithm definitely challenged kids, but seemed to make sense by the week’s end. We also took time to look at the practice Smarter Balanced test. Next week will be mostly testing, so there will be no math homework. Encourage your child to do work on scratch paper and to do their best on the test!
Ask, if 4 tables that are the same price cost $360, how much do 17 tables cost?
Listen to your child explain the cross multiply technique.
Extend the learning by looking at how ratios are a part of our everyday life.
5th Grade Math
Last week, 5th grade mathematicians reviewed coordinate graphing and conversion of liquid measurement. We also began review of rounding decimal numbers. This week will be mostly testing, so there will be no math homework. Encourage your child to do work on scratch paper and to do his or her best on the test.
ASK your child to round 23.548 to the nearest hundredth.
Listen to your child explain the visual for helping us remember conversion of liquid measurement.
Extend the learning by using rounding skills next time you go grocery shopping.
