IMPORTANT ALL SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
*Before school -- Please do not have students come to school BEFORE 8:35, unless they are doing studyhall with me. Here is the note from administration regarding the policy.
As noted in our handbook and on our website, doors open for students at 8:35 a.m. daily. Some students are invited to arrive early on certain days for study hall, math support classes or other reasons. Other students should not arrive before 8:35 a.m. because there is not staff supervision available before that time. This is a student safety issue, so we are writing to ask for your support.
In recent weeks, a large number of students have begun arriving between 8 and 8:35 a.m., or even earlier. If your students travel to school on their own, please work with them to adjust their travel times so they arrive no earlier than 8:35 a.m.
Teachers and other staff will be reviewing these rules with students this week and next. After next week, we will notify parents individually with concerns about early arrivals. We appreciate your understanding and support of these safety guidelines. Please contact Karen Torry at [email protected] or 503-359-4600 with any questions.
*Treehouse--NEXT week the 12th is the LAST Treehouse for Level 3. I may be able to host some after school studyhalls if it seems needed for kids, please contact me if this seems needed.
News of the Week
State Testing --We’ll have a break this week unless those who aren’t finished with the Language Arts component can test with an administrator. We’ll be back in the lab on the 17th.
Literacy
- Writing homework this week: work on memoir.
Part of the memoir project will be to create a digital story. We watched an example on Monday. To make the digital story, Merlins should start looking for digital photos they may have that deal with their story. And, those photos should be put into their Google Drive. Let me know if this is problematic for you and your family. I have a few techniques that could help.
Merlins are plugging away on their beautiful memoirs. We looked at how sentence length affects how the piece of writing sounds. They should continue to use their homework writing time to finish up their rough draft by Friday the 13th.
Most of our reading time was content reading on either the respiratory or circulatory system. We also finished Crash—a book we love about how a boy changes from a bully to a kind, appreciative kid! Be sure to ask your kiddo about it.
Ask, how does sentence length affect how a story sounds?
Listen to your child talk about Crash.
Extend the learning by reading and discussing a realistic fiction story or a memoir as a family.
Project
This last week we looked at the circulatory and respiratory system. We learned parts of these systems and did some fun labs. We measured our heart rate after certain exercises and learned our vital and tidal capacity of our lungs!
Ask, what did you enjoy most about the circulatory and respiratory labs?
Listen to your child explain why these two systems are so closely linked?
Extend the learning by researching what steps your family could take to be healthier.
6th Grade Math
Ratios were our topic of study this week as was wrapping up percents. Again, ratios are just another way to apply what we’ve learned about fractions. We wrapped up the week looking at how using the “cross multiply algorithm” can help us solve ratios. I will be sending the percents test (it was pretty short and sweet) home for families to review.
Ask how many inches are in a mile? Use ratios to solve.
Listen to your child explain the cross multiply technique.
Extend the learning by looking at how ratios are a part of our everyday life.
5th Grade Math- Last week, 5th graders worked hard to connect the mathematical reason of long division with remainder to the algorithm. We ended the week with the unit test. This week, 5th graders will review powers of ten, and explore coordinate plane, ordered pairs and regular polygons. This week's homework will be review in preparation for the state test, beginning May 16th.
ASK- Solve 345.67 times 23.6 and 5/12 + 7/9.
LISTEN to your mathematician explain the producers for completing the problems on homework.
EXTEND Play battleship. This helps with locating points on an coordinate plane.
