Students will have math homework, reading and writing* this week, as well as an online goal reflection (Literacy) to share with you. *Writing homework this week is either for the student to finish their fantasy, OR create a misspelled spelling list OR use typing web lessons OR free type on Google Classroom.
Our focus this week was studying the sun and the Earth’s tilt (secret word). The tilt of the Earth is responsible for seasons as we know it! To apply our learning about the sun’s angle, students went through a series of stations looking at light. Each station would earn them money to buy supplies for a solar oven that they’ll build next week.
Ask, how is Earth’s tilt responsible for the seasons?
Talk about the 4 different principles to build a successful solar oven.
Extend the learning to make solar oven at home and try out different designs.
Literacy
Whew! Our fantasy stories are about in the final draft form and ready to be shared! Last week we spent important time reviewing capitalization rules, commas usage, spelling issues and dialogue. We spent a lot of time discussing perspective with Tuck Everlasting—how each character views immortality differently. We’ll be wrapping up the book before spring break.
Ask what is the hardest editing and revising skill for you?
Talk about how those who make a living at writing experience the editing and revising process.
Extend the learning to read your fantasy to your family.
6th Grade Math
The ratio test, corrections and retake will all be due by Friday March 15th. The hardest part of this block is for kids to make sure they report the ratio correctly and understand how to convert measurements—especially when converting area!
Ask, if the ratio is given in wins : losses, how do you convert to wins : total games played?
Talk about different conversion methods when changing an area from square yards to square feet or square centimeters to square meters?
Extend the learning to create ratios related to your life.
5th Grade Math
I was impressed to see student growth as we reviewed our division and decimal multiplication skills this week. We started testing on Friday and we'll finish up Monday. That means look out for scored tests early this week, and support your child in correcting and retaking the test by Friday. I can't wait to launch into some fun geometry lessons next!
Ask, what's the trick to calculate a decimal answer that goes on infinitely? (Try 1 divided by 3)
Talk about what the test review process is like. Did you take advantage of the test review?
Extend the learning by exploring how to convert between fractions and decimals.
