Project
I look forward to our next three weeks to see how our project work this fall will lead us to our culminating event--The Sustainability Symposium! Taking all that we've learned from Outdoor School, systems thinking, engineering and our Geek Out focus, to ecology principles and our three science systems: energy, agriculture and watershed & wildlife, students will now look to solve a problem within Forest Grove. Students can choose to create a sustainable invention, create a piece of artwork that presents a sustainable idea or redesign Forest Grove with sustainable systems in mind. Our Symposium will be Thursday December 14th from 2:20-3:20. Everyone's invited!
Ask, what's your initial ideas to the Sustainability Symposium?
Talk about what it means to prepare a project to be presented publicly.
Extend the learning to find something to improve within your home or family to be more sustainable.
Literacy
We will be wrapping up our literature circle books in the next two weeks. I've enjoyed having students discuss what they've read and find evidence to back up their thoughts. It's also exciting having another major project wrap up--our poetry work. We will celebrate our hard work with poetry by hosting a Poetry Night on Thursday December 7th, from 5:30-6:30 and 6:30-7:30. Students will get to read a poem of their choice and light refreshments will be served. Please let me know what time slot would be best for your family IF you need one time over another by Wednesday morning. I will send a schedule out on Thursday the 30th.
Ask how would you characterize the main character of your book? What's your evidence?
Talk about what poem to share at the Poetry Night.
Extend the learning by finding a nature adventure to read as a family.
5th Grade Math
If you haven't yet seen your mathematician's Unit 2 Decimals test, look for that on Monday! Students will have until Wednesday to correct their test (with help if needed), retake missed problems (independently), and get a signature. We will also dive into fractions this week by exploring different models that help us think about fractions.
Ask what is a fraction, anyway?
Talk about how are fractions and decimals similar?
Extend the learning by looking at how fractions are used in your life, such as baking or sports.
6th Grade Math
We continue to plug away at our understanding of fractions. This week will take our block 3 test after having time to finish up our last lesson and do some review. Before break we looked at a cool problem that had students examine the difference between largest fraction and greatest amount in the context of cupcakes. In the problem, it turned out the person who brought the most cupcakes with sprinkles was not the person who brought the largest fraction of cupcakes with sprinkles compared to those without sprinkles.
Ask how would compare 3/5 and 7/10 to see which is the largest fraction?
Talk about different concepts from this block like LCM, GCF, equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions.
Extend the learning by cooking and and comparing the amounts used in recipes.
