Outdoor School Recap!
Wow, what a crew! Outdoor School was an awesome experience with this group of Merlins. Students rallied around each other to stay positive and supportive. The weather made for great field studies too!
In the water field study our focus was studying dissolved oxygen and catching creatures (we found crayfish, two different types of snails & dragonfly larvae.) Both are methods for measuring water quality.
During out time at the earth field study we simulated the tides to understand the difference between spring and neap tides. Then, we busted out maps of Oregon in the sand to understand the geologic features of our state. Another component of earth is to understand the process of decomposition---how the biosphere becomes part of the geosphere.
Erin and I changed the other two field studies to better fit our curricular needs. So, one field study became an intense look at scientific inquiry—the process for answering and asking scientific questions. Merlins set out in the different ecosystems to answer their “I wonders….” And, the final field study was a look watershed. Students started with an appreciation of watershed through a solo sensory (secret word) hike. Then we split into two groups—one looking at how land use affects watershed and the other took a specific look at how humans have changed the landscape around Magruder Outdoor Science School.
Ask, what was your favorite field study and why?
