NanoWriMo is a writing program at the Forest Grove Public Library. The meeting is every Wednesday, from 4-5pm and you get promps and share your stories to get feedback. If your interested in this, email [email protected]. The progam is for 12 to 18 years.Yesterday we went on an Out and About to the Backyard Garden, and learned about how form meets function. The basic idea of it is that something will look like what it would need to look like in order to meet it's function. To help us understand the concept, we did an activity. We made boats, no bigger than our hands put together, with at least 3 materials, that had to match at least one of three functions. Function one was being fast, and we found that a skinny, long boat went faster. The second function was strong, we found that a wide base could hold the most rocks, which was how we were testing it. The third and final function was looks. We found that big, colorful leaves made the best of this function. Another thing that helps to understand is your thumb. We learned that we might take them for granted. Try to tie and untie your shoe without your thumb! We tried, and it was pretty hard!
Today for an Out and About we went to the Boxer Gardens, a new garden built only a year ago by Pacific University. We went there to learn about habitat diversity. We had wooden frames that we set on the ground in a area of the garden. We had work sheets that had a grid on them and a color code. Then we used color pencils and filled out our paper grid with the color code to match the wooden grid on the ground. We found many interesting diversities, but some of the grids had less diversity, like mine for example. But over all it was a interesting and fun experience, and the Boxer Gardens were beautiful!About 2 weeks ago we had a substitute teacher for 2 days while Hilary was in San Diego. Her name was Terri, and she was very nice. While she was here we had art and got a 4.5. Well, now, 2 weeks later, Stephanie, the art teacher was gone, and we had a substitute art teacher. Guess who it was! Terri! Our class Hospitality Chair had made a card for Terri, and everyone had signed. She took this opportunity to give Terri the cards. We all did well, although we got a 4.5 because we were a bit on the loud side. Well, until next time!
Yesterday was Tuesday and we went on an Out and About the The Backyard Garden. While we were there, we learned about the difference between local and non-local foods by adding up how many miles the local food had to travel compared to how far the non-local food traveled. When we were done, we did a taste test to see if we could taste the difference. We ate an apple from the garden we were at, and one from over 300 miles away. The difference was very clear! The local apple tasted better! Until next time, bye!
